Ajmer, May 8: A total shutdown is being observed here in protest against the police lathicharge on Congress workers during Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje's trip to the city on April 30.

The bandh, called by the Congress, was supported by traders association. Educational institutions, local transport, and petrol pumps. Cinema halls also remained closed.

Emergency medical services and medicine shops have been kept outside the purview of the bandh.

After the police lathicharge on Congress workers during Ms Raje's trip, Congressmen and police clashed with each other twice. The security has been tightened following the clashes and police patrolling has been increased in all localities.

At least 1,000 Congress workers spread out in the city today and forced the closure of shops.

Congress MLA Dr Srigopal Baheti and Ajmer president Jasraj Jaipal said the bandh has been called over Ms Raje's discriminatory attitude towards Ajmer. He said Congressmen had wanted to hand over a memorandum peacefully to Ms Raje over the city's water shortage problem and to press for an IIT in the city. Instead police lathicharged the Congress workers and humiliated them.
