New Delhi, May 7 (UNI) The Supreme Court today issued notices to the Centre, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments on a petition challenging the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal Award.

A Bench comprising Justices S B Sinha and Marakandey Kadgu referred the petition to a larger bench.

Karnataka as well as Kerala and few other organisations had challenged the Tribunal Award in the apex court, alleging that justice was not provided to the two states as their requirements regarding their share in Cauvery water have not been properly addressed by the Tribunal.

It may be noted that there were widespread protests against the award in Karnataka and Kerala while Tamil Nadu been more or less satisfied with it.

The bench referred the issue to a larger bench on the grounds that a substantial question of the law has been raised in the petition.

Besides, the earlier judgement of the court on the issue was delivered by a larger bench and, therefore, it will be appropriate if the issue was again referred to a larger bench for adjudication.
