Prof of Punjabi University suspended for ''donkey march''

Patiala, May 7 (UNI) The Vice Chancellor of Punjabi University today suspended Dr Manjit Singh, Professor and Head, Department of Social Work for ''lowering the prestige of the University and hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikh community'' by organising a ''donkey march.'' A spokesperson of Punjabi University today said Dr Manjit Singh, convenor of a Joint Action Committee (JAC) which had launched a campaign against Vice Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh, was issued a 'show cause notice' a month back to clarify his position regarding his involvement in various unruly activities within the University.

He not only failed to reply, but also continued his disruptive and law-violating activities on the campus.

The recent act of Dr Singh led JAC of ''putting a turban around the head and neck of a donkey and organising a 'donkey march' in the campus had lowered the prestige of the University and hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community, the spokesperson said.

The Vice-Chancellor stated in the suspension orders that such a disgraceful act was not expected from a person of the rank of a Professor of a university, he said.
