Patil to review security situation in Asom
New Delhi, May 7 (UNI) Home Minister Shivraj Patil will visit Asom tomorrow to review the security situation in the North-Eastern state, where the most powerful insurgent group ULFA continues to wreak havoc.
Home Ministry sources said here today that the meeting assumes significance in the context of the reported intelligence inputs suggesting regrouping of ULFA cadres and extension of their areas of operation.
Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and top officials of the state Police and Civil Administration and the Chiefs of the central security forces are stationed there.
A recent Home Ministry report said Asom had witnessed 156 insurgency-related incidents from January to March this year, and a majority were carried out by ULFA. During the same period last year, the number of incidents was only 85.
Moreover, 99 civilians had been killed in the state from January to March this year, as against 31 in the corresponding period last year.
