Shillong, May 7: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has urged the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government to adopt proactive measures to deal with the insurgency in North East India.

The senior NCP leaders, who met here last week under the banner of the North East Coordination Committee of the NCP(NECCNCP), also asked the Centre to find a 'political solution' to the problem in the northeast.

''Lack of understanding of the historical background of the region and appreciation of the genuine aspirations of its people by the bureaucrats, posted here has affected the development of the North East,'' the NECCNCP observed.

The NCP leaders also resolved to give a clarion call to the people of the region to unite and act collectively to develop the region by exploiting its vast resources.

Urging the Union government to work out an urgent strategy to stop the influx, the NCP said that the influx of people into the region from outside the country, posed a big threat to the demography and economy of the area with other ramifications.
