Md Yunus awarded Rabindranath Tagore Birth Centenary Plaque

Kolkata, May 7 (UNI) Eminent Bangladeshi economist Dr Muhammad Yunus was today awarded the Rabindranath Tagore Birth Centenary Plaque for his outstanding contribution to human development by the Asiatic Society here.

At their 223rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) and presentation of awards ceremony, the Asiatic Society also awarded plaques, medals and scholarships for lecturerships to a number of eminent persons of the country for their contribution towards the society in various fields.

Among the prominent awardees included Professor Kabir Chowdhury (Tagore Peace Award) for his contribution to human understanding of peace, Justice P N Bhagwati (Dr Naresh Chandra Sengupta Gold Medal) for his contribution to the field of law and society and Dr Sukumar Mukherjee (Sailendra Nath and Manjula Dey Memorial Gold Medal) for his contribution to medical sciences.

Other eminent persons included Professor J S Grewal who received the Hem Chandra Roychaudhury Birth Centenary Gold Medal for his contribution to Indian history, late Munish Chandra Joshi who was bestowed the R P Chanda Centenary Medal for his contribution towards archaeology and art history, Mr Santanu Misra who received the Professor Nirmal Nath Chatterjee Medal for his contribution to economic geology and Dr Dhirendranath Nandi who received the Subrit Chandra Mitra Memorial Plaque for his outstanding work in the field of psychology.

On the occasion, Calcutta University Vice-Chancellor Asis Kumar Banerjee spoke extensively on the contribution of the Asiatic Society in the era of globalisation.

Asiatic Society president Biswanath Banerjee released two books published by the Society-'' Journal of the Asiatic Society'' and ''The Bangla Bhasay Bigyan Charcha.'' The books were edited by Dr Sharadindu Sekhar Roy.
