Agartala, May 7: The Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pinak Ranjan Chakraborty, here today affirmed that fundamental forces were still active in Bangladesh and they were trying to influence the election process in that country.

Talking to UNI here Mr Chakraborty said the recent serial blasts at some railway stations in Bangladesh were a sequel to the hanging of six anti-nationals including 'Bangla Bhai'. He, however, said the interim government was trying to handle the situation efficiently.

He said that India was trying to put pressure on Bangladesh authorities following the allegation of northeastern states that Bangladesh has been harbouring anti-Indian elements for the last few years.

''Fundamentalists in Bangladesh are still active and they have retaliated against the hangings of six of their people'', Mr Chakraborty said.

Mr Chakraborty arrived here last evening for a three-day visit and is scheduled to meet state Governor Dinesh Nandan Sahaya, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Industry minister Tapan Chakraborty and some top officials of the state.

Referring to the Indo-Bangladesh relationship, Mr Chakraborty said, ''Relations between two countries have been improving a lot after care taker government assumed office and the extension of the Indo-Bangladesh water treaty is the best example.'' Mr Chakraborty came here to discuss the contentious issues relating to bilateral trade and commerce as well as Indian investment possibilities in Bangladesh.
