Chennai, May 7 (UNI) CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury today said his party would continue to support the United Progressive Alliance(UPA) government at the Centre only to prevent communal forces from coming to power.

Talking to Mediapersons here on his arrival from New Delhi at the Airport he said there were many areas where the UPA government did not fulfill the promises made in the Common Minimum Programme(CMP) charted out by the coalition partners after it captured power.

Mr Yechury said ''As far as the left parties are concerned, our objective is to put pressure on the UPA government to implement the promises made in the CMP.'' The CPI(M) leader, who is here in connection with the four-day All India Conference of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), commenting on the ongoing Uttar Pradesh assembly elections hoped that a secular government would capture the power.

''The party based on the results will work out a strategy to ensure a secular formation'', he added.

He said the Left parties would discuss the Presidential election only after the emergence of UP results. ''We want to know the composition of the Electoral College, before deciding our stand on the presidential poll'', he added.
