Three IPS officers' police remand extended till May 8
Ahmedabad, May 5 (UNI) A local court here today extended till May 8, the police remand of three IPS officials, arrested on charges of killing an alleged criminal Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a fake encounter in November 2005.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate K J Upadhyay extended the police remand of D G Vanjhara, (Deputy Inspector General Gujarat Border Range), R K Pandian (Superintendent, Intelligence Bureau) and Dinesh Kumar (Rajasthan Police) by three days till May 8, instead of the five days sought by the prosection.
The extension was sought on the grounds that the police needed more time to find out details about the murder of Kausarbi, wife of Sheikh.
The CID application for further remand was accepted by the court since there was a need for further investigation due to the involvement of high profile officers and also to clarify the mystery behind the death of Kausarbi.
In a startling revealition in the case, the CID told the court that driver of arrested DIG D G Vanjhara, had told police that a senior officer was present when Kausarbi was killed.
''The driver of Vanjhara named a very senior officer from CID during interrogation. He claimed that the officer was a mute spectator to the murder of Kausarbi,'' a senior police officer told UNI, refusing to name Vanjhara's driver for safety reasons.
Earlier, the Gujarat CID had filed an application seeking the court's nod to conduct narco-analysis tests on the arrested officers.
Police sources said that the three IPS officers arrested in connection with the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh refused to co-operate in narco-analysis tests, when the CID wanted to seek their consent.
The CID investigating team had earlier sought the consent of the police officers for conducting narco-analysis tests on them in connection with the fake encounter that took place in 2005.
