US diplomat complains of assault at Aizawl airport

Aizawl, May 4 (UNI) American Center Director(Kolkata) Douglas G Kelly has revealed his shocking experience at Lengpui airport in Aizawl during his recent visit here.

Mr Kelly yesterday had given a written complaint regarding this to Mizoram Information and Public Relations director L R Sailo, alleged that he was 'punched' thrice by an airport official on April 14.

The diplomat said on that day he was to catch a flight back to Kolkata. But, due to bad weather, there was uncertainty regarding the flight schedule.

As stranded passengers queued up before the ticket counter some passengers intruded into the queue.

''This led to a chaos. An airport official punched me thrice and asked me to let the Mizos stand in front of me,'' he recounted.

Mr Kelly said he could recognise the official as H Vanlalrova, from the badge he was wearing.

Meanwhile, officials here said the incident was likely to affect the American Center's intention to promote partnership between US universities and the Mizoram counterparts.

''After this experience, and despite our positive interaction with students at the Mizoram University, we are giving a second thought to moving forward with this initiative,'' Mr Kelly said.
