Uganda regrets over killing of Indian youth

New Delhi, May 4 (UNI) A fortnight after New Delhi registered its strong protest with Uganda over the killing of an Indian youth there, Uganda's Interior Minister Rugunda today assured that his government would not allow any racial discrimination against Indians there.

Mr Rugunda today called on Overseas Indian Affairs MInister Vayalar Ravi and told him that his government would not allow any attack on Indians.

"It is a fact that the Ugandan government has taken the killing of the Indian youth seriously. It reflects the good relations that India always shared with Uganda," Mr Ravi told mediapersons.

Besides the minister, the Ugandan delegation also had Mr Sanjay Tiffna, MP, High Commissioner of Uganda in India Beyendeza and Deputy High Commissioner Nimisha Madhwani.

The youth, Devang Raval of Ahmedabad, was killed on April 13, when a protests by environmentalists in the Ugandan capital Kampala turned violent leading to attacks on businesses run by people of Indian origin there.

The environmentalists were protesting against a plan by the Ugandan Government to hand over nearly a third of the country's largest forest reserve to the Sugar Corporation of Uganda, a subsidiary Indian-run business house.

Two Ugandans were also killed in the violence, including one who was shot dead by a security guard when he attempted to loot an Indian shop.
