Strike call by DLP evokes no response in Kashmir
Srinagar, May 4: A strike call given by the Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Liberation Party (DLP) in protest against alleged Human Rights (HR) violations by the security forces and surrendered militants evoked no response from any part of the valley.
The breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for a general strike, supported by others, on the same issues and also in protest against the arrest of four senior amalgam leaders under Public Safety Act (PSA) tomorrow.
Shops and business establishments were opened with vhichle and transport was plyed on all routes as usual. Work in government offices and educational institutions was also normal.
Reports from South, Central and North Kashmir also said there was no response to the strike call and life was normal everywhere.
The DLP, headed by Hashim Qureshi, has given a call to protest against alleged attrocities by the Jammu and Kashmir police Task Force, Army and paramilitary forces and harassment of released militants and their rearrests.
Hashim, who is facing charges of hijacking Indian Airlines plane to Lahore before the 1971 India-Pakistan war, was the only leader other than mainstream parties to attend the third round-table conference called by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at New Delhi last month on Kashmir.
