Govt college/polytechnic in all Assembly segments: Minister

Chennai, May 4 (UNI) All the 234 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu will have either a government college or a polytechnic, Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy told the State Assembly today.

Replying to the debate on the demand for grants for his department, he said 33 of the 234 constituencies, did not have either a college or a polytechnic.

''In the next four years, this government will ensure that there will be no constituency without any college or polytechnic'', he said, amid thumping of desks by the treasury benches.

Mr Ponmudy also announced setting up of a government Arts College at Kulithalai, from where Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was first elected to the Assembly. ''This college will be named as Kalaignar Ponvizha Arts College'' to commemorate the DMK President's Golden Jubilee in Tamil Nadu Assembly, he added.

He said the government would also introduce shift system in all the government colleges from the next academic year. The system introduced on a trial basis in 10 colleges, has turned out to be a grand success and the government decided to extend it to all other colleges.

He said steps would be taken to introduce choice based credit system in all the universities in the state and a committee comprising Vice-Chancellors and experts would be appointed to have a uniform credit system for all universities.

Setting up of community colleges to enable poor students to pursue higher education, allowing students to shift to regular colleges from distance education scheme and vice-versa, introduction of counselling in government colleges, pursuing job-oriented course while studying degree course, free text books to students of government polytechnics, setting up of Language labs in government arts and science colleges and polytechnic, appointment of 4682 teachers in government and government-aided colleges after providing them one-month training, setting up of a new university for management studies, were among the major announcements in the Minister's reply.

He said an award for best educationist would be introduced from this year. The award, carrying Rs 25,000 and a citation, would be given to six people.

A similar award of Rs one lakh and a citation would be given for best college that excel in all aspects of education, he added.
