New Delhi, May 4 (UNI) The central government has sought a report from the Kerala government over the deaths of scores of new born babies due to an infection at the state run Sree Avittam Thrunal (SAT) Hospital in Thiruvananthpuram.

Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury today said her ministry asked the state government to submit a detailed report about the circumstances under which a large number of children died due to bacterial infection in the government hospital.

If the Central government was not satisfied with the report, it could send its own team to visit the state to study the ground situation and make recommendations to prevent such deaths in future, she said.

A Thiruvananthpuram court had yesterday directed the police to file a case amounting to culpable homicide against seven persons, including Kerala Health Minister P K Sreemathy, for failing to take steps to prevent the deaths of 38 new born babies due to an infection at the hospital.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate S Gopala Krishnan asked the Medical College police to charge the case under sections 304 and 34 after hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by one Mr V Vikraman. The case was filed in the backdrop of reports that new born babies died of an alleged hospital-acquired infection at the SAT hospital during the past four months.

Meanwhile, the Health Minister announced to sanction a sum of Rs 27 lakh for making the hospital infection-free and said additional staff would also be appointed soon.
