Asom eyes renewable sources for power
Guwahati, May 04 (UNI) The Asom State Electricity Board (ASEB) will soon have to generate 10 per cent of power from renewable sources.
Eyeing the non-conventional sources of energy, Dispur is planning to implement the idea by 2012.
State Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi said, ''Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has given his nod to the proposal. We are waiting for Cabinet approval.'' The required quantum of power is increasing in the state and the existing power resources are inadequate in meeting the demands, Mr Bordoloi stated.
''As the state has a variety of renewable energy sources, like biomass, industrial waste and solar, the government is planning to bring non-conventional energy business in the mainstream,'' he added.
Mr Bordoloi further informed that the share of power to be generated from renewable sources would be raised to 15 per cent by 2015.
Asom generates around 250 MW of power as against its daily requirement of 850 MW. Its own generation are two thermal projects at Lakwa and Namrup in Upper Asom and a hydel project at Karbi Anglong.
