TN CM announces financial aid to Kakkan's son, grandson

Chennai, May 3 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today announced an assistance of Rs 1.25 lakh each to the son and grandson of late Tamil Nadu Minister Kakkan, who are in penury.

Mr Kakkan had served as the Home Minister with distinction in the erstwhile Kamaraj regime.

Replying to a special call attention motion moved by Congress member C Gnanasekaran in the state Assembly, he said Rs one lakh each would be deposited in the bank account of Mr Kakkan's son K Bhagyanathan and grandson Kannan. The interest accrued from it would be given to them for their monthly expenses.

He said apart from this, Rs 25,000 each would be given in cash as assistance to them.

Following reports that his two sons K Natarajamurthy, who was undergoing treatment at Government Mental Health Institute for the last 18 years and K Bhagyanathan and his son Kannan (grandson of Kakkan) were in penury, the government sought details from the Madurai District Collector.

The government considered the plight of Mr Kakkan's sons and announced the assistance after Mr Bhagyanathan and his son refused to take land or house pattas outside their village for their livelihood.

Mr Karunanidhi also announced that Mr Natarajamurthy had been getting treatment at the hospital at government's expense.
