Mercury shoots up to 39.4 deg C in Delhi after day's respite

New Delhi, May 3 (UNI) A day after light rains and cool breeze brought tremendous relief to Delhiites from the summer heat, it was back to scorching temperatures with the mercury shooting up to 39.4 degrees Celsius.

The sharp rise in day temperature, from 32.3 degrees C yesterday to 39.4 degrees C today, was largely due to abatement of the easterly winds that had yesterday helped to bring down the mercury in Delhi to nearly seven degrees below normal.

Though today's maximum temperature of 39.4 degrees C was the normal level of day temperature at this time of the year, the coming days could witness a return to the heat wave with weatherman forecasting a rise in maximum temperatures during the next few days.

''The current meteorological analysis suggests gradual rise in day temperature over Delhi and other parts of Northwest India during the next two to three days,''the Met office said.

The Met office has forecast a mainly clear sky in the capital during the next 24 hours with the likelihood of the partly cloudy sky by evenings and thundry development in some areas.

Light rains, accompanied by a cool breeze, brought cheer to the people in the capital, which has been reeling under a severe heat wave over the past week.

The mercury dropped to 32.3 degrees Celsius, a seven degree drop from 40.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
