JK introduce 8 schemes to achieve self sufficiency

Srinagar, May 3: Jammu and Kashmir government will introduce eight new schemes to achieve self sufficiency in the production of mutton, milk, eggs and woods.

The government is going to introduce eight new schemes to upgrade live stock in far flung and hilly areas besides acquainting the farmers with latest technology of cattle rearing, Animal Husbandry and Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din said.

Jammu and Kashmir is spending billions of rupees to import mutton, milk, chicken and eggs from different states as about 30,000 chicken and 5,000 sheeps and goats are being consumed per day in the valley alone.

The Minister said profession of vets is very noble as they render services to live stock which play a pivotal role in the survival of mankind besides maintaining the ecological balance.

Addressing an annual general body meeting of veterinary doctors at IMPA here today, the Minister emphasised the need for upgradation and revitalising the animal husbandry sector on the laid down policies of the government at ground level so that self sufficiency in the production of mutton, milk, eggs and wool production is achieved.

He said there are tremendous natural resources available for rearing of live stock in the state which need to be utilised optimally.

Mr Taj said such areas which have not been covered under Para VAT Scheme would be brought under its ambit.

Two new laboratories one each at Srinagar and Jammu are being set up for increasing the mutton production in the state, he added.

Director Animal Husbandry said annual milk production in state has touched 806 metric tons while Rs 32 lakh revenue has been earned by the department.
