Ranchi, May 03 (UNI) Jharkhand unit of CPI(M) has condemned the Madhu Koda-led UPA government for not declaring holiday on May Day in the state.

The party had alleged that the 'advertisement-savvy' government had distanced itself from the plight of the workers.

CPI(M) state secretary J S Majumdar said till 2005, the day was declared as government holidya but in 2006 Arjun Munda-led NDA governmnent stopped it which Mr Koda did it for this year.

''In this context the Chief Minister and Labour Minister's greetings on the occasion became hollow,'' Mr Mazumdar added.

'' Lakh of rupees from state's exchequer were spent for media advertisement carrying May Day greetings, while workers and employees were forced to work on the day,'' he said.

He further said the government had not declared the minimum wages for agricultural workers so far despite recommendations of the Minimum Wages Advisory Board.

Since the state's formation, the government had not yet formed any wage board or engineering and construction workers welfare board, he said adding that no steps were being taken to revive closed and sick industries, in which lakhs of workers were rendered jobless.

The CPI(M) demanded that the Koda government should immediately hold joint trade union meetings in the state to address the problems.
