Khandwa, MP, May 2 (UNI) The District and Sessions Court today awarded custody of an infant, abandoned in a train, to a wealthy family residing in this district headquarters.

Baby Shiv was found here on February 18 and two well-to-do families moved court seeking custody. Judge Chandrashekhar Tiwari handed down the ruling in favour of businessman Bhagwan Das Ahuja and his wife Anjana. The other couple, Mumbai-resident Railway Engineer Ravindra Singh Gahlot and his wife Sunita, were assured by the Ahujas that they could visit Shiv whenever they wished.

The childless couples began attempts to take custody after learning about the infant through media. Mr Gehlot's lawyer presented details of the couple's Rs 1 crore property that would help provide Shiv a bright future. On the other hand, Mr Ahuja said that his was a joint family. His two brothers had two and three daughters respectively.

The joint family became the basis for the ruling.

Shiv was at the District Hospital for about two-and-a-half months and christened by a nurse.
