Kolkata, May 2 (UNI) A high-level Congress delegation will leave here on May 6 for Delhi to meet President APJ Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and seek their intervention on Nandigram land acquisition issue.

" We will inform the Central leaders about the state's latest position on land acquisition issue and law and order situation and urge them for their immediate intervention to stop violence in Nandigram otherwise the situation would turn worse in near future", CLP leader Manas Bhuniya told a news conference here today.

The Centre should act immediately for greater interest of the farmers and defuse violence in Nandigram arising out of forceful land acquisition by the West Bengal government.

He said the party workers would stage demonstrations in front of all police stations in Jhargram to protest the police excess on Congress supporters, who were protesting the renewed violence in Nandigram on April 2.

The party demanded punitive action against Officer-in-Charge of Jhargram police station Debashis Chakraborty, Bhuiya said.

He also termed yesterday's attacks on the intellectuals in Nandigram as "unfortunate".

City's prominent intellectuals including Saoli Mitra and Sunondo Sanyal were attacked and their vehicles were torched by the CPI(M) cadres in Nandigram, he alleged.
