Amritsar records 42.7 degrees celsius

Chandigarh, May 2 (UNI) Amritsar was the hottest place in the plains as heat wave conditions prevailed in parts of Punjab and Haryana even as the mercury was below normal at some places in the region today.

Intense heatwave swept Amritsar recording 42.7 degrees celsius, six degrees above normal. However, the mercury dipped to 37.6 degrees at Ludhiana and to 36.7 degrees, two degrees below normal, at Patiala.

The current spell of heatwave sweeping the region has already claimed the lives of five people in Punjab.

The heatwave prevailing in some areas of Punjab and Haryana is likely to abate during the next two days, according to the Weather Office here.

The maximum also plummeted at Hisar recording 37.8 degrees celsius and settled at 34.2 degrees, four degrees below normal, at Ambala. The temperature also dropped at Karnal which registered 35.6 degrees celsius, two degrees below normal.

The heatwave has abated from Himachal Pradesh following rains at isolated places.

Heavy rain, followed by hailstorm, lashed Shimla and its surrounding areas which brought down the temperature to 17.6 degrees, four degrees below normal, in the town. The capital town recorded 22 mm rainfall till this evening.

The fashionable Mall Road and the historic Ridge ''Maidan'' wore a deserted look in the wake of rain and hail, forcing tourists and locals to remain indoors. Isolated places in Chamba, Mandi and Kinnaur districts also experienced rainfall.

The mercury drastically dipped at Bhuntar in Kullu district, recording 23.5 degrees, six degrees below normal, while Sundernagar in Mandi district registered 26.6 degrees. Kalpa recorded 20.0 degrees.

Chandigarh and its adjoining areas got respite from hot weather conditions today as the temperature further dropped to 34.6 degrees, two degrees below normal, from 35.8 degrees celsius recorded yesterday.

The Met office predicted moderate to heavy rain or thundershowers at many places in Himachal Pradesh and light to moderate rain or thundershowers at few places in Haryana and Punjab during the next 24 hours.

Thundersquall with speed exceeding 45 km per hour is likely to occur at isolated places in the region during the period.
