36 towns of Punjab selected for development scheme

Chandigarh, May 2 (UNI) Thirtysix towns in Punjab have been selected under the Urban Integrated Development Schemes of Small and Medium Towns (UIDSSMT) and the state government plans to seek the immediate assistance of the central government for this project.

The selected towns include 15 district headquarters besides Mandi Gobindgarh, Nangal, Zirakpur, Batala, Majitha, Pathankot, Patti, Malout, Gidderbaha, Abohar, Fazilka, Zira, Banur, Dera Bassi, Malerkotla, Rajpura, Khanna, Kharar, Sirhind, Dasuya and Phagwara.

Presiding over a meeting of Commisioners of Municipal Corporations and Regional Deputy Directors of the Local Government department here today, Local Bodies Minister Manoranjan Kalia said these towns have been selected on the basis of the financial health of the municipal bodies and their capacity to contribute 10 per cent of the project cost.

Under the scheme, the central government will contribute 80 per cent of the expenditure and the rest would be shared by the state government and the local municipal bodies in equal proportion.

Detailed project reports, to be prepared after taking the views of consultants short-listed by the central government, will be submitted to the Centre within the next three months. Mr Kalia has asked his ministry officials to write to all the consultants in this regard.

The consultants would be free to take up projects for more than one town but they have to work on the reports simultaneously, he told the meeting.

Implementation of the projects relating to water supply, sewerage, sewage treatment plants, solid waste management, roads, fly-overs, widening of roads and parking are to be taken up on a priority basis. the minister told his officials.

Mr Kalia has decided to accord top priority to Ludhiana and Amritsar towns which are to be covered under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

A project of Rs 2053 crore for Ludhiana includes Rs 826 crore for six lane ring road by-pass, Rs 823 crore for water supply and sewerage, Rs 166 crore for facilities for urban poor and slum dwellers and Rs 140 crore for solid waste management.

The project of Rs 3150 crore for Amritsar includes Rs 2567 crore for urban transport, Rs 312 crore for water supply and sanitation, Rs 105 crore for promotion of tourism and Rs 36 crore for conservation and development of heritage. Besides, Rs 120 crore would be spent on facilities for urban poor, Rs 10 crore on urban governance and Rs 22 crore for water supply and sewerage in Amritsar.
