Mumbai, May 2 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA), in a joint demolition drive this week, propose to demolish 350 slums on the Goregoan-Mulund Link Road for a road connecting project to benefit commuters travelling across the Eastern and the Western suburbs.

According to officials, the demolition of the slums on Arun Kumar Vaidya Marg, will facilitate the connection of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road and traffic on the Aarey Road will ease after completion of the connecting road.

''The connecting road is very important for the eastern and western suburbs, and the traffic plying in the area will be at an advantage after the connecting road is ready.'' Assistatn Municipal Commissioner Babashbe Pawar told UNI.

The Dharavi-Bandra link road, the Santacruz-Chembur link road, the Andheri Ghatkopar link road, and the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli link road connect the eastern and the western surburbs here and play a vital role in easing the traffic, apart from the Goregaon-Mulund link road.

The slum dwellers on the Goregaon-Mulund link Road or the GMLR will be rehabilitated by the MMRDA. The road connecting project was in the pipeline for a long time and the authorities had not reached a decision regarding the demolition.

After demolition of the slums, the construction of the connecting road will begin and is expected to be ready soon. In the last two weeks, the BMC has demolished as many as 800 slums in the western suburbs.
