Two die in heatwave in Punjab, isolated rains in Himachal

New Delhi, May 1 (UNI) The heatwave claimed two more lives in Punjab today, taking the toll to five in the state while isolated rains in Kangra, Kullu and Lahaul Spiti districts kept minimum and maximum temperatures down across Himachal Pradesh.

The deaths occurred at the Ludhiana Railway Station in Punjab. The bodies of the deceased, one of them identified as a beggar, were recovered from the railway station.

Intense heatwave swept Amritsar which recorded 42.8 degrees C, six degrees above normal, but the maximum stayed one degree below normal at Patiala which showed 37.8 degrees.

Ludhiana registered 38.4 degrees .

Scorching heatwave prevailed in some areas of Haryana with Hisar recording 43.8 degrees. The mercury, however, settled at 37.5 degrees, one degree below normal, at Karnal.

Chandigarh and its adjoining areas got respite from hot weather conditions as the temperature dropped to 35.8 degrees from 37.2 degrees recorded yesterday.

In Delhi, the sharp drop in mercury, from 40.4 degrees yesterday and the season's highest of 42.4 degrees during the weekend, brought further respite for the people of the city from the scorching heat that has been sweeping the national capital since last week.

Weathermen attribute the duststorms and thunderstorms in Delhi to the strong wave of Easterly winds over Indo-Gangetic plains.

The people of Pune heaved a sigh of relief as mild spells of rains brought them much-needed respite from the scorching heat with the mercury touching 41.4 degrees.

Dharamshala town in Kangra district of the state received 18 mm rainfall from 1430 hrs up till 1730 hrs, while light showers lashed isolated places in Lahaul Spiti and Kullu districts.

Thick clouds were hovering over the famous tourist resort of Shimla, which only yesterday had recorded the hottest day at 26.5 degrees and night at 17.7 degrees.

Kinnuar and Chamba districts of the state were also under a layer of clouds even as the temperatures continue to remain four to five degrees above normal.

Shimla today recorded a maximum temperature of 26 degrees, while Sundernagar and Bhuntar were hot at 34.9 degrees and 32.3 degrees respectively, the Met office said.

Day temperatures were markedly above normal in Himachal Pradesh, appreciably above normal in some parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, coastal Karnataka and in remaining parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha.

They were above normal in some parts of coastal Orissa, Saurashtra and Kutch, Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, south interior Karnataka and Kerala. They were markedly below normal in some parts of Bihar, appreciably below normal in some parts of Jharkhand and were below normal in interior Orissa and east Uttar Pradesh. They were normal over the rest of the country.

In Andaman and Nicobar, a brief spell of rain lashed some parts of Port Blair and its adjacent areas but it was not enough to bring the dwellers relief from the scorching heat.

The Met Department termed such occasional rains as pre-monsoon showers.
