SC admits petition against election of Haroon Yusuf
New Delhi, May 1 (UNI) The Supreme Court has admitted a petition challenging the election of Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf to the Delhi Assembly on the grounds that he was holding an office of profit at the time of filing his nomination papers in the 2003 Assembly elections.
A bench headed by Justice Tarun Chatterjee admitted the petition yesterday and also issued a notice to the minister.
The petitioner, Naved Yar Khan, had challenged the election of Mr Yusuf on the grounds that he was holding the post of chairman Delhi Waqf Board, which is an office of profit and was, therefore, disqualified from contesting the election.
The petitoner has filed the appeal in the apex court against the order of Delhi High Court, which had dismissed his petition.
He had asked to the court to set aside the election of Congress MLA from Ballimaran as illegal.
