NHRC seeks report from Karnal DC on allegations of HR violations

New Delhi, May 1 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent a notice to Karnal District Collector, seeking a factual report within four weeks on allegations of human rights violation of dalits in Bibipur village.

Taking suo motu cognizance of newspaper reports on the alleged incident, the Commission said if the contents are true, they raise a serious issue of human rights violations.

According to the news report, Dalits in the village have to face atrocities by the upper caste people.

Dalits in the village struggled to construct a temple against severe resistance from upper caste people and officials. However, theirs was razed ostensibly on the grounds that it was built on village school land, it said.

The upper caste people did not allow dalits to enter their temple.

''Many of the Dalit women 'begar' labour (a form of bonded labour) work in fields from sunrise to sunset for little more than subsistence level food,'' the report said.

''There is no sanitary facility available for Dalits, which puts women at considerable risk,'' it added.

The report said in Haryana violence against Dalits is constant.
