Farmers to intensify agitation after May 25 to press demands

Kolhapur, May 1 (UNI) The chief of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) Raju Shetty today warned that farmers' agitation would be intensified after May 25 to draw the attention of the Maharashtra government to the long pending demands over sugarcane and milk prices.

Mr Shetty, mla, was addressing a farmers rally in front of the district collectorate after ending the 10-day 'Niradhar Yatra' here.

Among their demands are immediate release of second instalment of Rs 380 per tonne to sugarcane growers and hike in the payment of dairy farmers.

He warned that the Sangathana would not allow the entry of trucks to sugar factories, if the farmers' payments were not cleared by May 25.

He said another agitation would be launched to stop collection of milk, for four days after May 25 to demand hike in price of milk for farmers.

Narmada Bachao Andolan leader and social activist Medha Patkar was present at the farmers rally and extended her support to them.
