Centre seeks Raghavan Committee extension for anti-ragging measures

New Delhi, May 1 (UNI) The Centre has sought a 15-day extension for the Raghavan Committee, appointed by the Supreme Court, for suggesting anti-ragging measures in colleges and other educational institutions.

Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium sought the extension yesterday from the apex court on the grounds that the report was not yet complete.

A Bench comprising Justices S H Kapadia and B Sudrashan Reddy directed the Centre to mention the pending matter before the Bench, headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat, next week for relief.

Earlier, former Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh had submitted a report suggesting measures for ridding the campus life from the influence of political parties and to check criminalisation of student politics in the university.

In view of the alarming increase in incidents of criminal and anti-social elements in student politics, the Court had directed the Centre to implement recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee.

The Court had earlier appointed the Raghavan Committee to suggest measures to check incidents of ragging of freshers leading to their torture and humiliation by seniors.
