Tension grips Manipur over youth's killing by AR

Imphal, Apr 28 (UNI) People of the Kumbi area in Manipur's Bishnupur district today protested against the killing of a youth by the troops of 7 Assam Rifles (AR) on Thursday .

The protestors have alleged that the AR personnel called Nongmaithem Tomba (35) out of his house and later shot him.

AR sources, however, said the youth was killed in an encounter.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC), formed to protest the killing, had also demanded shifting of the 7 AR from Kumbi, repeal of the AFSPA (1958), judicial or magisterial inquiry and actions against the AR personnel involved in the killing.

The JAC had also submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh urging him to direct the AR troops to stop harassing the civilians and to involve police in any operation, which is mandatory as per directive of the Supreme Court.
