K'taka Government to set up Coastal Police stations

Mangalore, Apr 28 (UNI) In view of possible security threat in the coastal areas, the Karnataka government has decided to set up Coastal Police Stations, Inspector General of Police (Western Range) H N Satyanarayana Rao said today.

Speaking after releasing Police Manual working on sea "Baptism at sea" on board of Kasturba Gandhi Indian Coast Guard ship at New Mangalore Port near here, he said that Two such stations have already been opened in Bhatkal and Karwar on April four and three more would come up in the three coastal district of Daxina Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada. These stations would be provided with two boats each for patrolling.

He said that at present coastal security force had no much work in view of the lack of facilities who were on only gathering intelligence and handing over the culprits to the security agencies.

With the establishment of coastal police stations with the provision of required equipment, it would now have the authority to register cases, interrogate the arrested and file charge sheet, he added.

He also called upon the ICG to get in 100 per cent preparedness to meet any eventuality during the monsoon period due to start from June. The coast guard personnel have rescued several fishermen at Malpe coast in the last monsoon. however, the force should be responsive to the fishermen's call mainly at the emergency situation during monsoon besides prime job of security of nation on the coastal belt having great security concern with access to international Airport on sea coast, he added.
