Mumbai, Apr 27 (UNI) Sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) today caught a police sub-inspector, attached to the MIDC police, while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 as instalment of the total amount of Rs 60,000, that he had demanded from a person seeking favourable remarks to enable him to get an anticipatory bail in a misappropriation case.

The accused Harishchandra Dalvi (52) was caught while accepting the first instalment of the bribe from complainant Anil Kishore Sophale, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vilas Tupe told UNI here.

Saphale, who used to work in a private firm, was given USD six lakh by company owner for a certain work. He took this money home and kept it in the cupboard while his wife mistakenly gave to someone else. The company had therefore lodged a complaint with the police.

Meanwhile, Saphale moved an anticipatory bail application in the Sessions Court fearing arrest.

The accused Mr Dalvi, probing the case, had demanded the bribe to enable Saphale to get bail. But Saphale promised to give him the money in equal instalments.

Simultaneously, Saphale had lodged a complaint with the ACB. Last evening, the complainant was to pay first instalment of Rs 20,000 but was, however, late. He therefore threatened Saphale that he would see him in the court.

A formal complaint was lodged at 0430 hrs today and Mr Dalvi was arrested under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, after the thorough verification of the complaint.
