EC directs CBDT to unearth source of funding of surrogate adverts

New Delhi, Apr 26 (UNI) The Election Commission (EC) has directed the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to probe into the source of funding for the surrogate advertisements issued during the ongoing Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

The Commission in a letter to CBDT Chairman has said that it had received complaints about surrogate advertisements in various newspapers coinciding with the assembly polls in the politically crucial state.

Instances of such propaganda by some NGOs had also come to light, the EC added.

The Commission has asked the CBDT to unearth the source of funding for such surrogate advertisements in various newspapers and to take appropriate follow up action.
