Andhra, Mah account for maximum number of deaths in road mishaps

New Delhi, Apr 26 (UNI) With dubious consistency, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra have been registering the maximum number of fatalities in road mishaps in the country for the last three years, with Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu closely following them.

Of the total 94,968 deaths in road accidents in 2005, Andhra Pradesh accounted for 10,534 and Maharashtra 10,259 while Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu accounted for 9955 and 9758 fatalities, respectively.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Minister T R Baalu today said during the calendar year of 2005, there were a total of 4,39,255 road mishaps in the country while the figures for 2003 and 204 were 406726 and 429910 respectively.

In the years 2003 and 2004 too, Andhra Pradesh accounted for the maximum number of deaths in road accidents with figures of 9679 and 10,552 while Maharashtra had figures of 9483 and 9875 deaths.

Uttar Pradesh registered 7845 and 9946 deaths in 2003 and 2004 respectively while Tamil Nadu accounted for 9275 and 9507 fatalities during this period.

With regard to Union Territories, Delhi accounted for the maximum number of deaths with a figure of 1862 in 2005, registering a downward trend when compared to 1907 deaths in 2004.

Delhi was followed by Puducherry and Chandigarh with figures of 226 and 125 deaths in 2005 respectively.

Lakshadweep did not have a single death in road accidents during all the three years of 2003, 2004 and 2005.
