EC to act tough on transfer of criminal-politicians to other jails

Lucknow, Apr 25 (UNI) The Election Commission (EC) has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to submit by tomorrow an Action Taken Report by tomorrow on shifting of some high profile criminal turned politicians from certain jails.

The directions of the EC assume significance as the state government did nothing despite the approval by the commission to transfer these prisoners to other jails a week back, Additional Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Devesh Chaturvedi told reporters this evening.

Independent candidate Mukhtar Ansari, his MP brother Afzal Ansari along with several others are likley to be sent from Ghazipur jail to other jails where the elections have been completed.

The EC has given standing orders to shift the criminal background politicians to some other jail from where they could not influence the ongoing election process, the additional CEO said.
