ADGP rank officer to tackle 'deserting' NRI grooms in Punjab

Chandigarh, Apr 25 (UNI) In a bid to provide much awaited relief to the victims of the apathy of travel agents and NRI husbands or grooms, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today announced to appoint an officer of the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) to deal with such cases on priority bases.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held here today under the chairmanship of Mr Badal with a delegation led by the President of the Lok Bhalai Party B S Ramoowalia.

The Chief Minister also announced that the cases of the deserted brides by NRI grooms and the youth who get duped by the unscrupulous travel agents would be settled within a time frame to ensure justice. He also categorically said that travel agents/immigration consultants and marriage bureaux would be dealt with as per the law of the land.

Fake advertisements released by immigration consultants and marriage bureaux in the press would be thoroughly probed, the Chief Minister told Mr Ramoowalia. The Government would soon evolve a mechanism to probe the authenticity of such advertisements.

The Chief Minister also pointed out that he would soon take up the issue related to the deportation of NRI grooms declared as proclaimed offenders with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Chief Minister also referred the cases of Baljinder Kaur, daughter of late Sewa Singh resident of Badni Kalan (Moga) who had been duped by her NRI husband to the tune of Rs 15 lakh.Mr Ramoowalia also told the Chief Minister that 22 persons of village Kussa (Moga) were duped by travel agents and so far no action had been taken int the case.

Mr Badal told the Lok Bhalai Party chief that the case of harassment of Rupinder Kaur Bains by NRI Jujhar Singh, a resident of Bhanomajra (Nawanshahar) had been refered to the DGP for the thorough investigation.

At the meeting, Mr Badal emphasised the need for setting up of fast track courts exclusively for dowry related cases and also advocated the simplification of the judicial process to give justice to the victims of travel agents and NRI grooms. He also revealed that the state government would soon set up an independent department for NRIs Affairs which would certainly help the government to keep strict vigil over the illegal activities of travel agents besides checking the trend of desertion of married girls.
