Ahmedabad, Apr 25 (UNI) Eight child labourers were rescued today from a factory in Meghaninagar that manufactures 'chikkis'.

A team comprising Deputy Labour Commissioner Damor, police and members of Children and Labour Welfare Samiti including its president Kamlesh Soni today visited 'Sree Ganesh chikki' manufacturing factory owned by Hinaben Jayantilal Shah and rescued children all between ages nine and 13. All of them have been taken to an observation home at Khanpur, Mr Soni said.

Mr Soni told UNI that these children were forced to work long, hard hours and no medical examination was being done on them which is by law mandatory.

A complaint was lodged against the manager Prajapati and his close relative Jhala, who were responsible for the children's fate.

However, only Jhala has been held so far.

Mr Soni said usually these factory owners never bothered to conduct medical examination as most of the ages of the children were shown in record as 18 instead of their original 9 or 10 years. Since the penalty is Rs 20,000 they pay the fine and escape.

Mr Soni said that Ahmedabad District Collector has formed a task force to check such maltreatment of kids. ''Despite our complaint to the task force and by other NGOs too it continues to turn a deaf year,'' he said.
