Mara students of Mizoram celebrating Festival

Aizawl, Apr 23: Mara Youth Association(MYA) and Mara Students' Association(MSA) of Mizoram are celebrating the centenary of Mara community, a backward tribal clan of the state of Matupi township in Southern Chin state of Myanmar.

MSA Secretary Ko Khin thi told UNI today a week-long festival was organised to unite Mara tribes of Chin state and Mizoram, as 2007 is the religious centenary year for Mara people.

The MSA has been celebrating the main Mara Social Festival every year in the last week of April since 1966. A good number of Mara students from Yangon, Mandalay, Pakkoku and Kalay Myo universities of Chin state have participated in the festival while cultural troops of Mara tribes settled in Mizoram have also taken part, Mr Thi stated.

Mara Youth Association in Mizoram is the only authorised organisation to work for social welfare in Chin state under the government of Myanmar.
