Baripada, Apr 22 (UNI) An elephant with a tail touching the ground is called 'Jharu-dum' or a broom-tailed elephant while that with an ankle-length tail is called ''Sher-dum''.

Elephants with tusks at the same level are called 'Samtal', those with tusks in different levels, 'Taal-Betaal' and similarly, elephants with tusks growing in opposite directions are classified as 'Akash-Paataal' and those with only one tusk are known as 'Ganesh' or 'Ek-dantia'.

These are some of the interesting nomenclatures given by the experts to establish individual identification among these pachyderms, which would be recorded during the head counting of elephants in Orissa next month.

Depigmentation of face, trunk, ears, neck, belly, rump and legs of an elephant is considered as individual identification which would be listed in the census sightings, Simlipal Tiger Reserve (STR) Director Debabrata Swain said.

In an on-going training programme being conducted here, the census officials would be advised to put on record these identification marks of individual elephants in For ''B'' to build up the database to facilitate analysis of census results.
