Patiala, Apr 22 (UNI) The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has asked the Haryana Government to send a detailed plan on the procedure to be adopted to 'puncture' (cut) the Bhakra Main Line (BML) canal near Azamgarh in Haryana, adjoining Patiala district, for supplying water to the proposed Hansi-Bhutana canal.

Official sources said here today that the Central Water Commission(CWC) has already given the permission to the proposed project of construction of a 110-kilometer long tributary from Narwana branch of BML to carry waters to the sourthern districts of Haryana. The state government has been advised by the CWC to approach the BBMB to 'puncture' the BML near Azamgarh village.

However, the Punjab government has not given its consent to the project of the Haryana governmet, which is on the final stages of planning. Officials of the Punjab government said that if the BBMB allows the 'puncture' of the BML, over 60 villages in Patiala district will be left with no irrigation water.

Officials of the Punjab irrigation department revealed that in case they allow a cut in the BML from a point identified by the Haryana government, then huge tracts of agriculture land in around 60 villages in Punjab would be left without water, as it would not reach the tail end villages on the BML.

CWC, while approving the Hansi-Bhutana canal maintained that it was technically viable and Haryana was only drawing its share of the waters from the BML. The CWC then told Haryana to approach BBMB for 'puncturing' the BML.

The Haryana government plans to have water flowing in the new canal by the next monsoon session. The plan is to draw around 2200 cusecs of water for the new canal from Narwana branch of the BML.
