Ancient 'havelis' to become tourist complexes in Punjab

Chandigarh, Apr 22 (UNI) With a view to promoting tourism in Punjab, the state government has decided to convert ancient, historical heritage 'havelis' and monuments into heritage hotels on the pattern of those in Rajssthan and other states.

Stating this here today, Tourism Secretary Jagjit Puri said that on the directions of Tourism Minister Hira Singh Gabaria, 100 year old ancient 'havelis', castles, forts and inns would be converted into hotels and as places of tourist importance. This would not only attract the tourists both from within and outside India but also highlight and depict many aspects of the ancient cultural heritage of Punjab.

The upward trend in the tourist arrivals would result in a substantial increase in the exchange earnings, Mr Puri said.

He also said that all the Deputy Commissioners had been directed to submit the geographical and historical details of such buildings lying unused and neglected in their respective districts.

He pointed out that the central government under various schemes had been giving adequate financial aid to develop such historical monuments as heritage hotels.
