WD from Pak fail to bring any relief as day-night temp still high

Srinagar, Apr 21 (UNI) Western Disturbances (WD) from Pakistan, active over Jammu and Kashmir, have failed to bring any relief for the people of the state as the day and night temperatures remained above normal.

However, there were rains in Pahalgam, the base camp holy Amarnath caves in south Kashmir, Bhaderwah and Batore in Jammu region, a weather office spokesman told UNI.

He said for the past few days, WD from Pakistan were active in the region. However, there was no rainfall in the valley because the WD were very high. It said due to the wind direction, the western disturbances passed above the Valley to cross over to China.

The official said the maximum temperature was recorded at 27 degrees, seven degrees above normal. The minimum was also one degree above normal, he added.

The water level in river Jehlum and its tributaries had also increased because the snow on the higher reaches started melting.

This could result in water shortage during the summer, the experts said.

He said the forecast for the next 24 hours would be moderate rainfall at several places across the Kashmir valley.

So far the highest maximum temperature of summer in Kashmir was recorded 29 degrees Celsius, which was ten degrees above normal on Monday.

The highest ever temperature recorded in Kashmir was 31.1 degree Celsius on April 20, 1946.

On April 30, 1999, the maximum was recorded at 30.2 degree Celsius while it stood at 28.7 degree Celsius on April 28, 1993.

The highest ever maximum temperature recorded in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during the past 80 years was on June 29, 1978 when the mercury had gone up to 37.8 degree Celsius.
