School principal sentenced for demanding bribe

Vadodara, Apr 21 (UNI) A local court here today sentenced a school principal to four years simple imprisonment for demanding a bribe of Rs 1000 for issuing a school leaving certificate in 2002.

Judge N H Tadel found Rajendra Bhailalbhai Patel guilty of the charge and sentenced him to 4 years imprisonment. The court, however, acquitted Kunjbihari Sumanbhai Trivedi, secretary of the M P Patel Education Society which manages the Anupam Vidyalaya, for lack of evidence.

Hayada Banu, a former student of the school who after marriage had settled in Mumbai, wanted to have a ration card and passport made.

She had asked her brother Y A Salim, a Vadodara resident, to approach the school and get the school leaving certificate.

When Salim approached and asked the principal for the certificate, he had demanded Rs 1000 for the same. On March 3, 2002, Salim approached the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) and filed a complaint against Patel. The ACB officials laid a trap and arrested Patel. A case was also filed against Kunjbihari.
