Nagpur, Apr 21 (UNI) The police here have arrested a doctor from Lucknow and his mother for allegedly hiding his HIV (human immuno deficiency virus) positive status at the time of marriage and then passing on the deadly virus to his wife.

According to the police, Suman (name changed) married Dr Harshavardhan Chaturvedi of Lucknow in 2000. The family was in Bijapur in Karnataka at the time of the marriage since her husband and his father Dr Prakash were working there, they said.

Soon after the marriage, her in-laws, including her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law Asha and sister-in-law Jaya began harassing her for dowry, the police said. The entire family later shifted to Lucknow as Dr Harshavardhan and Dr Prakash took up jobs there, they also said.

Some years after the marriage, she began to keep ill health.

Concerned, her father brought her back to Nagpur in January last. A medical examination revealed that she was HIV-positive, Suman said in her complaint to the police. It was then that she came to know that her husband was HIV-positive even before marriage and that he had concealed this from her, she alleged in the complaint.

On the basis of her complaint, the police registered an offence under sections 498 and 406 (3) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The police arrested Dr Harshavardhan and Asha from a hotel here last week when they had come to the city to visit Suman. They were initially remanded to police custody till yesterday. Their police custody remand has now been extended up to April 22.

Suman's father-in-law Dr Prakash and sister-in-law Jaya are still absconding, the police added. Suman is now undergoing treatment at a hospital here.
