Raje shares award with weavers
Jaipur, Apr 20 (UNI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has dedicated the 'United Nations Womens Together Award' to the weavers of the state.
Raje surprised hundreds of weavers who came to congratulate her at her residence that she would wear a Kota Doria saree at the award function in New York to be held on May 14, said Yogendra Nandwana who led a delegation of weavers.
Raje has been honoured with the award this year for her relentless efforts for promotion of handlooms like Kota Doria, Talchapar and Khadi in the state and country.
The Chief Minister left no stone unturned in promoting the cause of wavers and even cat walked for Kota Doria and Khadi in Jaipur and Bangalore much to the chargin of the conservative political class.
She has also roped in acclaimed fashion designer like Bibi Russel of Bengladesh to give a new look to Khadi in tune with the times.
The award first initiated in 2000 seeks to pay tribute to those women who are dedicated to stand out in their individual activities with a commitment to work, and a devotion to make the world a better place to live.
The other recipients of the award include artist and peace activist Yoko Ono, journalist Rosa Maria Calaf, Businesswoman Francine Lefrak, writer Barbera Probst Solomon, Nobel laurate Wangari Mataahi, UNESCO ambassodor Marisa Berenson and Unicef ambassodor Antonio Banderas.
