Koraput, Apr 19 (UNI) At least eleven tribals have succumbed to gastroenteritis and other related diseases during the last fortnight in the inaccessible Narayanpatna block in the district.

However, unofficial report said with one more death reported on Tuesday, the toll had gone up to 21 in the naxalite -dominated block, where over 150 people in eight panchayats were affected despite all efforts by the district administration to bring the situation under control.

The authorities deputed a team of doctors to the affected villages to assess the situation and take all possible preventive measures to contain the disease.

Sources said the tribals of Gatiguda under Talgumandi were the first to be reported suffering from the gastroenteritis after a feast and soon it spread to other villages.

Koraput Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) K H Reddy, who had been monitoring the situation, maintained that only 11 tribals had so far died in the block, while over 50 villagers were under treatment in different health camps.

The medical teams had been working on a war footing as nearly 30 villages were affected. The doctors pressed into service were finding it difficult to venture into some of the affected pockets as they were inaccessible and dominated by naxalites.

District officials said over 500 people were given anti-diarrhea tablets and villagers were advised to take proper medicines.
