Bajpe Airport out of red, earns profit for first time

Mangalore, Apr 19 (UNI) overcoming a string of losses, the Bajpe Airport, near here, has for the first time earned a profit of Rs 83 lakh during fiscal 2007.

Airport Authority of India (AAI) Director M R Vasudeva told UNI that according to provisional results, the Airport had the year earned a revenue of Rs 11.02 crore with expenditure being Rs 10.19 crore.

Attributing the increase in the air traffic in the last financial year as the main reason for profit, he said the traffic revenue had gone up this year which mainly came from route navigation, landing and parking charges. Another reason for the revenue growth was the commencement of three international flight services from the airport, he said.

Mr Vasudeva said that the number of flights to and from the Bajpe Airport during the year had increased from 4528 in 2005-06 to 6669 in 2006-07. During 2005-06, the airport has earned revenue of Rs 6.22 crore with expenditure stood at Rs 9.02 crore. The non-traffic revenue such as renting out its terminal building premises to airline operators, hoarding and display advertisements, snack bar, car park requisite stall and restaurants had also increased during 2006-07, he said.

He said that aircraft movement during the last four years were 3944 (2004-05), 3908 (2003-04), 3492 (2002-03) and 3504 (2001-02).

During these years, the airport could not able to earn any profit.
