New Delhi, Apr 19 (UNI) The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) today launched a programme for training at least 1,000 entrepreneurs from Schedule Castes and Scheduled Tribes communities.

The programme is part of the Affirmative Action Plan promised by the industry for the upliftment of the disadvantaged classes.

The plan was submitted to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh a few months ago after the industry came under pressure by the Minstry of Social Justice and Empowerment to introduce quota for STs and SCs in the private sector.

Assocham would train ST and SC candidates to launch their own enterprises by referring them to various financial institutions and technological centres for fiscal and technological assistance on subsidised costs.

The areas identified for such entrepreneurship include handicrafts, cottage industries, brasswares, mushroom cultivation, gems and jewellery, carpentry, meat&fish exports etc in both small and medium scale centres.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman, Assocham Task Force on Scheduled Castes&Scheduled Tribes, K Chugh said the Chamber had already trained approximately 700 workforce that availed of VRS from large number of public sector undertakings in different categories for redeployment and even making them self-employed at its Kanpur centre.

The chamber has already entered into an agreement with ANaRDE Foundation, a charitable organisation registered by non-resident Indian from London under the Bombay Trust Act to provide training to people of various communities that have been vulnerable for years to make them self-reliant.

It also be organising a series of programme for SCs and STs' upliftment in the areas of productivity enhancement, export finance, dealing with FIIs and banks, marketing techniques for business development and customer relationship management.

These would be organised by Assocham without any cost to potential entrepreneurs belonging to these classes, Assocham General Secretary D S Rawat said.
