Kochi, Apr 18 (UNI) People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) today urged the Kerala government to strictly implement the Captive Elephant Management Rules and to chalk out a policy to impart training to mahouts to protect tuskers.

PETA India's coordinator of campaign and legal affiars N G Jayasimha said if the government was serious in protecting elephants, it should take immediate steps to strictly implement the rules.

Stressing the importance of establshing a platform to train mahouts in handling the pachyderms, Mr Jayasimha said in the majority of cases the elephants get irritated and violent because of the ill-treatment meted out by the mahouts.

Noting that the elephants get irritated due to starvation, exhaution, walking and noise pollution during parades and processions, he said it was improper to parade elephants in political rallies, temple festivals and indulge them in street begging.

'' An elephant needs 200 kg of food and more than 150 litres of water a day and cannot walk on tar roads,'' he added.

The elephants, which were social creatures, should not be kept in capitvity and be freed to lead a natural life.'' They are intelligent and sensitive animals and are known to mourn the loss of a relative, just as humans do,'' Mr Jayasimha noted.

To protest against the indifferent treatment meted out to the pachyderms, the Mumbai-based PETA India today organised a function in which a chained volunteer dressed in a body suit with an elephant mask crouched in front of a banner reading ''Shackled, Beaten, Abused.'' The protest is part of a series of demonstrations that the group is holding in an effort to draw attention to the appalling conditions of captive elephants.
