Gulbarga, Apr 17 (UNI) Bringing cheers to the crisis-ridden sugarcane growers of the district, officials have persuaded Renuka Sugar Factory to accede the farmers' demand and buy sugarcane from them.

In a meeting here attended by Sugarcane Commissioner Manjunath, Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pande and various farmer leaders, the Commissioner said the factory management agreed to lift sugarcane from farmers, who had grown sugarcane in five or less than five acres.

Renuka Sugar's management said their two units' total crushing capacity was 3,250 tonnes per day and they could not lift sugarcane more than that quantity.

The officials would convene a meeting with sugarcane growers on April 19 to prepare a list of small and medium scale farmers from whom the factory would lift sugarcane on a priority basis.

Meanwhile, some farmer leaders alleged that Renuka Sugars was giving top priority to lifting sugarcane from big farmers, neglecting the small and medium farmers.

CPI(M)-affiliated Rashtra Rytu Sangha President Maruthi Manpade deplored that the farmers in the district had grown excess sugarcane and asked how could the ryots sell the produce if Renuka Sugars expressed inability to lift the sugarcane.

It may be recalled here that nine sugarcane farmers had attempted suicide in front of officials at Jewargi in the district on April 11 in protest againt the factory's attitude of buying sugarcane from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra instead of local farmers.
